The Keiskamma Altarpiece from Hamburg, South Africa returned to St. James Cathedral for an Eastertide display March 29 through May 11, 2008. St. James was the site of the start of the Altarpiece's U.S. tour in August 2006. It has since travelled to UCLA; Grace Cathedral, San Franciso; St. Mark's Cathedral, Seattle; and Washington National Cathedral.
The Altarpiece which is 14 feet high and 22 feet wide tells the story of the courage and hope of the people of Hamburg in addressing AIDS/HIV. Groups of ten women organized by AIDS clinic director Dr. Carol Hofmeyre began the project in 2005 using embroidery, beadwork, wood, wire and photos to tell the story of those lost to AIDS and their survivers. Each group was assigned one of 14 panels to work on. Fashioned after the 16th century Isenheim altarpiece in Germany, the Keiskamma Altarpiece tells the Hamburg story through three layers whose themes are Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Reality.
